French pilgrimage badge Montfortain
Badge issued by l’Association Marie Reine des Coeurs (Fraternity of Mary, Queen of Hearts). Montfort in north-western France is a major place of pilgrimage for the veneration of Marie Reine des Coeurs and Saint Louis-Marie de Montfort (1673-1716). The central motif of this badge shows an image of the Madonna statue with St. Louis-Marie of Montfort kneeling on the the left and an angel to the right.
Made from die-stamped brass with one enamel (dark blue) and a gilt finish. There is a pin clasp on the reverse and the mark of Penin à Lyon . Penin was one of four generations of medal engravers from Lyon who also engraved dies for badges and coins. The badge measures 43mm high x 43mm across (about 1 11/16” x 1 11/16”).
